Travel Map

Past, present and future

Currently in Sevilla, Spain. After exploring the city and taking a siesta, this evening consisted of a Tapas Tour (hostel organised) followed by a Flamenco Dancing Show, which was great. It's the third night in a row Ive seen flamenco now and I love it more and more each time.

Up until now I have travelled through 8 countries (9 if you count Vatican City) with more to go. Although the end is in sight. I am so excited at the thought of seeing everyone again. But I could also keep travelling, there are so many more places to see and things to do. The main problem with this ofcourse is all the future trips I now have planned and the costs involved in this expensive hobby.

I apologise for my slackness, I know I haven't made any Italy updates but they will come. For those who are asking though here is my (almost complete) travel map. It includes the places I've been and a rough plan of the places yet to see. Namely the Netherlands.

Zoom in on Europe to see the exact locations and scroll over them for dates and on the odd one photos where I have worked out how to add them.

Not sure how accurate this is but apparentely I have thus far made 48 stops and travelled 27693 kms!

Bonjour

and other good old high school French

sunny 26 °C
View My Europe Getaway on amy_eve's travel map.

Dr Benson would be so unimpressed. (for those who dont know he was my year 8 French teacher). Turns out my French is a disaster. I did try, I always said "Bonjour" and explained that I speak very little French in French, which was often enough to get help either in English or to work through the French language with me. It turns out since being in Italy, where my primary school Italian means I count and know a few colours, not particularly useful really, since being here I realise that even the little bit of French I have was a HUGE benefit. So thanks Dr. Benson, you're a legend and next time you want me to march around the oval makign french sounds I'll be up for it.

Basically my French took me from Paris to Avignon. Then from there to Nimes, Pont Du Gard, Marsielle, Nice, Eze and out of the country on a day trip to Monaco!
What a week! Actually 10 days! And it was fantastic. Paris was full of great tourist attractions (and tourists ofcourse). I climbed the Eiffel Tower, which by the way is not at all over rated (Maddie), the view from the top is AMAZING! Belgium__L..nce_206.jpg
And ofcourse the Louvre, the Arc de triumphe and a heap of other great famous sites including the Moulin Rouge.
Belgium__L..nce_220.jpg
Although sadly I could not see a show as tickets ranged from about 100 euros to 200! The only downfall to Paris was the Parisian men. Within the first hour of arriving in France I had been asked out by a local for drinks. In the following 4 hours I was asked out/chatted too/just grabbed numerous times. Including one scary man who spoke no english and still keep making advances. So untill I met some people in my hostel the evenings were not so much fun.

Avignon was much smaller then Paris still touristy but gorgeous. The Pont d'Avignon (famous from the song) was great and the ville de avignon was even more gorgeous then avignon and had great views of the city. Ofcourse the still intact city walls made for a great walk around as well.

Nimes was lots of fun. Again a smaller town but with a HUGE amphitheatre which was once used for gladiator matches and bull fighting (sometimes still done to this day).
The old town hall was really interesting. This building has had numerous functions over its many years of existence. It is currently used for viewing a 3D movie about the history of Nimes.
Belgium__L..nce_061.jpg

I took a bus out to yet another famous bridge the Pont du Gard. Which is quite an amazing structure built to transport water into Nimes. It is even more amazing as it was built prior to cement or any other form of fixative so each stone has to be perfectly positioned and shaped in order for the arches to not collapse!
Belgium__L..nce_389.jpg

Then I headed down along the French Riviera. Stopped off in Marsielle on the way to Nice.
About Marsielle I really can't describe it better then the lonely planet- "Gritty, grimy and gloriously real" Marsielle was ...interesting. I guess Im finding I know almost from the minute I arrive in a place how I fell about it. Marsielle was just plain grotty.
So instead of a close up of Marsielle. Here it is from a distance. From the top of Notre Dame (my favourite attraction of my short visit) Marsielle looks lovely.

Nice=beauty
Cote d'Azur=gorgeous
Beaches=pebbles=great to look at from a distance, but not really ideal for someone who loves a sandy beach with at least a little surf.
Really had fun in Nice. Partly the awsome hostel. Partly the markets. Partly the views. Mostly the chilling out I hadnt done for a while.
Check out the gorgeous view of the PEBBLED beach

Then took a day trip to Monaco (via Eze village-very cute). Monaco was great. Ofcourse went to the Casino and the Port (WOW to the boats) and the Princes Palace. But best of all was just walking down the streets and checking out the richness(sorry cant think of a better word) of the place. Most of all it even made me think for a while of becoming a cardiologist and moving to Monaco. The cardiology rooms are located on the main avenue which overlooks the Port and the wonderful parks and Palace across the port. The buildings are gorgeous, old (not sure how old but for any Aussie they are ancient- not so much compared to Rome) 3 story rooms with huge glass fronts for the views. Hmm cardiology...

So France was great. Travelling alone was heaps of fun and I got to meet lots of really interesting people. But the Parisian men just made me all that much more cautious. Thanks to high school French at least I knew when they were after something I wasnt so happy about.

PS- Update- From nice to Milano, then to Florence and now Im in the ancient city of Rome!
There are ancient ruins everywhere! Oh and one is a cat sanctuary aswell.
PS Holly to see all 4 of the ninja turtles (ie Renaissance artists) head to Florence!

Beutiful Brugges

And all the Belgian specialities

overcast
View My Europe Getaway on amy_eve's travel map.

Brugges is a town of absolute beauty. It was once a major port, however over the years became unused and some might say was left to disrepair. But the town I saw was gorgeous and the history there was immense. It is known as Venice of the North and its not surprising why...

IMGP2726.jpg
This photo shows a 13th century sea harbour. Nearby is a fish market which is still working today. Seriously, you could smell it a mile off.

IMGP2766.jpg
To the left is a 15th century convent which is also still used to this day, but is also open to nosey tourists such as ourselves. Between the trees is the tower of the Saint Servaes church

While in Brugges we tried yet another Belgian specialty... WAFFLES

And ofcourse I couldn't leave the country without testing out the Beer. And from a person who usually turns my nose up at anything beer. This stuff is FANTASTIC! I gotta find me some in Oz.
IMGP2787.jpg

Gotta run, internet cafe is about to close. But Belgiam was awsome and I may even head back through there on my way back to the UK, especially thanks to Ubcle Pieters neighbour who got me a friendly little free ticket on the TGV (Frances fast trains) from Brussels to Paris, FIRST CLASS! What luxury!

Quick update. Left Brussels, for Paris spent 4 days there then Avignon and now Im in Nimes about to head up the Riviera! Very exciting but more updates on France at a later date.

Love lots

Crossing country borders

all seasons in one day 18 °C

The sheer size of Australia makes it impossible to travel over state borders on a frequent basis (unless you live in Albury/Wodonga ofcourse). Melbourne to Sydney alone takes a full day!
This week Holly and I did a DAY TRIP to Luxembourg from Belgium. It only took 3 hours on the train from Brussels to Luxembourg City and our passports never left our bags.
We spent the day exploring this "fairytale city" and then returned to Brussels in the evening.
3 hours on the train from my place in Melbourne would get me to Sale!!!

Luxembourg is rather beautiful. There is heaps to see and do, although I think a day trip sufficed for me.

We walked past a gorgeous old building which I insisted on stopping to take a photo of, just because I loved it. In the time it took me to focus the camera and shoot the shot the sky had opened up and the rains were in! We raced down the street to find some cover only to look at the map and find we had been looking at the Grand Ducal Palace...The ex home, current working place of the Luxembourg Royals.
IMGP4276.jpg

To avoid the rain we visited the Museum of History of Luxembourg. Which was really worthwhile and made the rest of the day so much more meaningful. Luxembourg is a fortified city. Much of it's fascinating history still remains not only in the museum but all over the city.
A walk along the bridges of the old fortress is an absolute must in Luxembourg if only for the magnificent views (not that my photography skills could ever live up to its beauty-Anna you would have been in heaven) IMGP4297.jpg

Then a visit into the Bloc Casemates for a true feel of the forts ... and the tiny doorawys and crazy number of winding stairways. Anyone whos fitness is not great dont take Exit door I, take J instead. "I" only leads you under the bridge up and down an extra 4 flights of stairs, 3 of which are tiny spiral stairwells, and then returns you to J anyway!

So after all those stairs and cramming all that history into our heads (I think I learnt more then I ever learnt from Mr Androu) it was time for a well earned rest.
Planete Chocolat seemed the perfect choice for a strange version of Iced Chocolate and some pralines. Yum yum!!! Oh yeh and we were actually sitting on the road, cars driving past all the time, not a very wide road either!
IMGP4335.jpg

The day ended with the 3 hour return trip into Brussels and my abslute amazement at Europes size and travelling possibilities!

Belgium

and eating with little spoons!!!

semi-overcast 19 °C

Here I am in Brussels the capital of Belgium.
Travelled here on the Eurostar with my cousin Holly and we are lucky enough to be staying with our great aunt Berteke and uncle Pieter in Halle, Brussels.
They are looking after us fantastically well Berteke is!!! My old uncle is a dirty old man he always wants lots of kisses!
IMGP2487.jpg
This was in the rose garden (the largest rose garden in Europe) beside the castle Coloma

On our first day here, Sunday (27/05), we met both my mum's cousins-Luke & Michel and their 5 children- Mina, Sacha and Zachery, Quentin and Charlotte. It was a great day and i was VERY EXCITED to find that they eat desert with little spoons!!! So now we know were it comes from.
IMGP2438.jpg
The kids are great. Despite the difficulties with them only speaking Flemish (and French) and me speaking near on no Dutch excepting the swear words Ive picked up from mum yelling at us ;-) we managed to get on fine.
IMGP2427.jpg
Had a great time at the "Kermis" eating "Oliebollen"

Today we went into Brussels centre and saw the upper and lower ends of Brussels. Lots of magnificent old buildings and sights to see. Ofcourse Belgium is known worldwide for its amazing pralines, beer, chocolate chaud, mussels and waffles. So we checked out the food and bought a rather large box of disgustingly wonderful chocies to bring home and we're still stuffing our faces this evening.
IMGP4168.jpg

And ofcourse among the great sights and tastes of Brussels we had to find the most famous water fountain- The Manneke Pis...
IMGP4188.jpg
Can you believe there is also a Jeanneke Pis
IMGP4193.jpg
So- Iain I found him- I believe you!!!

Dag, Amy
